Jon Best had top bowling figures with 4 wickets for 40 runs in 14 overs, and worth a big mention was David Wynn, who removed both Bardsey openers to finish with 2 wickets for 20 runs. Collingham 116-9 in 25 overs
Steeton 117-6 in 24.1 overss
With only 2 matches being completed due to the weather Steeton 1st XI victory against Collingham away has put them in pole position in the league early in the season. The heavy rain had reduced this to a 25 overs-a-side match, and Collingham had to bat first. They were well contained by tight bowling from Australian Nick Carroll who collected 5 wickets for 42 runs from 12 overs, and Jon Best who collected 4 wickets for 72 runs from 13 overs. Collingham scored 116 runs for 9 wickets in their 25 overs. In a close finish Steeton passed the Collingham total with 5 balls and 4 wickets to spare. Top scorer was Lee Spragg with 29* not out, just beating his brother Paul Spragg, who scored 23 runs. In a fine all-round performance Jon Best also scored 20 runs. Steeton finished 117 runs for 6 wickets from 24.1 overs, to collect all the available points from this encounter.
Menston 96 a/o in 38.1 overs
Steeton 99-4 17.2 overs
Steeton 1st XI continued their good start to the 2005 campaign with a resounding victory against Menston. The visitors were asked to bat first and made a solid start with former captain Dave Lester leading the way with several lusty blows. 54 runs were added for the 1st wicket before the introduction of Neil Spragg turned the balance of the game. Firstly he had overseas player Hutton caught behind and then ripped through the middle order to pick up 5 wickets at a cost of only 18 runs. Overseas player Nick Carroll supported him well at the other end picking up 3 wickets for 25 runs. The tail was finished off by Jon Best taking 2 wickets for 27 runs. The other bowler used was David Wynn, who bowled well with the new ball but did not pick up the wicket he deserved. In reply Steeton wobbled at the start losing Alex Howarth and Neil Spragg cheaply. Solid contributions of 19 from Paul Spragg and a first 50 runs from Nick Carroll steadied the ship before John Akrigg with a quickfire 23* runs not out finished off the game with 44 overs of the day remaining. Steeton now lie in second place 2 points behind early pace-setters Horsforth.
Steeton 331-5 in 50 overs
Horsforth Hall Park 175-4 in 50 overs
Steeton 1st XI continued their excellent start to the 2005 campaign with a resounding winning draw at Hall Park. Steeton 1st XI batted first, and piled on the runs thanks to this year's Australian Nick Carroll, who scored a magnificent 153, including 5 sixes & 18 fours. Steeton dominated proceedings away at Hall Park after being asked to bat on good pitch. Alex Howarth was caught behind in the second over of the day which brought Australian Nick Carroll to the crease. He then dominated the bowlers firstly in partnership with Paul Spragg (39) and then Neil Spragg (50). Nick reached his first fifty in 51 balls and then needed only 33 more balls to reach his first century for Steeton. He added a further 53 runs, smashing the ball to all parts of the ground. When Nick was out the score was 263 runs for 5 wickets. Jonathan Best 29* runs not out and Gary Boulton 37* runs not out then took up the mantle and blasted 68 runs of the last 8 overs to give Steeton a daunting total of 331 runs for 5 wickets in their 50 overs. In reply Hall Park lost overseas player Allegretto in the first over to a fine catch by James Emmott and then never seriously attempted reaching the 2 point mark of 248. On a good batting pitch the Steeton bowlers struggled to make any serious inroads. The pick of the bunch was Paul Hardwick, whose 10 overs cost only 18 runs for 1 wicket. Hall Park innings petered out to 175 for 4 wickets in their 50 overs. Steeton collected 5 points & Horsforth Hall Park barely deserved their 1 point. After 4 matches Steeton now head their division by 3 points.
Addingham 191-8 in 45 overs
Steeton 192-3 in 36.3 overs
Steeton 1st XI progressed to the Second Round of the Waddilove with a fine win away at Addingham. On the second good batting wicket of the weekend Steeton were made to work hard for their victory by a young Addingham team. The hosts won the toss and decided to bat. They got off to the worst possible start when with the first ball of the game Jonathan Best bowled Campbell, who was not playing a shot. This brought Mark Taylor to the crease and he dominated proceedings adding 40 with skipper Stapleton (19) and 67 with J Hall. He had scored 68 when he was caught behind off Paul Hardwick. Hardwick was the only Steeton bowler to find any rhythm and his 9 overs cost only 27 runs for 3 wickets. With a little more luck Paul's wicket haul could have been more substantial. Hall continued to be a thorn for Steeton and he was 50 not out when the Addingham innings ended at 191 for 7 wickets. In reply openers Howarth and Proctor added 37 for the first wicket before Proctor was caught at point for 12. Howarth and Carroll then added 34 before the latter was bowled by Hall for a quickfire 23 runs which brought John Akrigg to the crease. He and Howarth added 102 runs together before Akrigg was caught for a fine 53 runs with the winning total in sight. This brought Jonathan Best (8*) to the middle and he promptly ended the game with two boundaries with 9 overs remaining. Howarth held the innings together and ended 82 not out. Steeton have first division Rawdon in the next round of the cup and will have to be significantly sharper in the field to be competitive.
Thackley 231-8 in 50 overs - 1 pt
Steeton 1pt
Steeton 1st XI were rained off in their home league fixture against Thackley. The visitors batted through their 50 overs, despite 12 overs being lost to the rain in the first innings and finished with 231 runs for 8 wickets from 50 overs. Neil Spragg was the pick of the bowling with 2 wickets for 39 runs. Paul Hardwick also took 2 wickets for 77 runs. The other wicket takers were Aussie Nick Carroll (1-17), Lee Spragg (1-35) & Jon Best (1-55). There were 2 catches for keeper Neil Wilson, and one each for James Emmott, Paul Spragg & John Akrigg. During the lunch break the 'heavens opened'; the pitch was soon flooded, and the decision to abandon was not a difficult one. Both teams collect 1 point.
Steeton 198-6 in 45 overs
Rawdon 57-3 in 21 overs
Steeton progressed to the 3rd round of the Waddilove Cup in a rain affected game against first division Rawdon. Asked to bat Steeton had a fine opening partnership of 97 in 24 overs between James Procter (42) and Alex Howarth (46). Procter playing only his 3rd first team game played an assured innings and was severe on anything on his legs. The good work was continued by Nick Carroll (17), Neil Spragg (27), John Akrigg (16) and Jonathan Best with a quickfire 24 at the end. Steeton finished their innings on 198 runs for 6 wickets in their 45 overs. In reply Steeton's bowlers asked to ball straight and full performed admirably. Jonathan Best 9-1-22-1 set the example and he was followed by Paul Hardwick 4-1-12-0 and the outstanding Neil Spragg 6-0-17-1. When the heavens opened after 21 overs Nick Carroll (2-1-1-1) had just started his first spell with a wicket and left Rawdon at 57 runs for 3 wickets after 21 overs. At the same stage Steeton were 83-0 a lead of 26 which under the new rules meant they progressed on a faster scoring rate.
Steeton 240-8 in 50 overs
Knaresborough 215-9 in 50 overs
Steeton 1st XI batted first and scored a substantial 240 runs for 8 wickets in their 50 overs batting first at Crag Top. This score was largely due to a great innings by opener Paul Spragg, who scored 129 runs from 111 deliveries, and included 2 sixes & 15 fours. The other players to make contributions were John Akrigg (28), Gary Boulton (21), Neil Spragg (15) & Oliver Gledhill (11). In reply Knaresborough were kept to 215 runs for the loss of 6 wickets in their 50 overs, which meant Steeton had a winning draw (4-2). The pick of the bowling was Paul Hardwick, whose 18 overs cost 48 runs as he collected 3 wickets. The other bowlers to take wickets were Neil Spragg (1-46) & Gary Boulton (1-70)
Steeton 240-8 in 50 overs
Silsden 215-9 in 50 overs
Steeton 1st XI out-played Silsden, but were unable to shift Silsden's last pair to collect all the points. Steeton amassed 269 for the loss of 9 wickets after being asked to bat by local rivals Silsden. At 99 for 4 after 24 overs Steeton looked to be wobbling. However Paul Spragg with an excellent 94 and Gary Boulton 48 had other ideas adding 89 for the fifth wicket in 15 overs. When both were out in quick succession Lee Spragg 26 and Oliver Gledhill 28* not out continued the run flow to enable Steeton to reach a substantial total. In reply Silsden never gathered any momentum after Paul Hardwick removed opener Meehan in the first over. Wickets continued to fall frequently Hardwick claiming 2-17, Neil Spragg 3-28 and Lee Spragg 3-38. At 84 runs for 9 wickets and with 15 overs remaining Silsden looked dead and buried. However Andy Pullen 21* and Walker 24* battled valiantly against a tiring attack and managed to see the overs out to gain 1 point for their side. Steeton looked favourites for a win, but had to settle for 5 points from a winning draw, after Silsden's stubborn rearguard defence.
Pool 223 a/o in 50 overs
Steeton 226-4 in 41.1 overs
Steeton moved to the top of the Aire-Wharfe Division B after a comprehensive 6 wicket victory against rivals Pool. After winning the toss and asking the visitors to bat Steeton got off to the best possible start when Neil Spragg had Pool's overseas player Simon Dart caught at second slip by cousin Paul in his first over. Paul Hardwick followed this up by having the other opener Singleton caught by keeper Neil Wilson. Pool then consolidated and reached 95 runs at 25 overs with the only further loss of S Wood out LBW to Nick Carroll. At 158-3 with 15 overs remaining Pool looked like achieving a sizeable total especially with M Murphy (98) and M McEneaney (46) in full flight. However they were pegged back when Lee Spragg (2-52) had McEneaney caught and then opening bowlers Paul Hardwick (2-47) and Neil Spragg returned and slowed the run rate down significantly. Spragg cleaned up the tail to finish with 5-30. When the last Pool batsmen was out in the final over, they had achieved 223 runs. In reply Steeton got off to a flying start and were 64 for the loss of Paul Spragg (25) after only 10 overs. When skipper Alex Howarth (37) was out in the 16th over the score was 95. Nick Carroll (40) and John Akrigg (24) added 28 for the third wicket before both fell just before drinks. John Best (47no) and Neil Spragg (40no) steadied the ship before seeing Steeton to victory with 9 overs remaining. Steeton scored 226 runs for 4 wickets in 41.1 overs to win by 6 wickets.
Calverley 234-7 in 50 overs
Steeton 197-8 in 50 overs
Steeton 1st XI had to settle for 2 points from a losing draw at Victoria Park. Calverley batted first and amassed 234 runs for the loss of 7 wickets in their 50 overs. Calverley's opening batter S Moore scored 103, and Steeton's opening bowlers Paul Hardwick & Jon Best took 3 wickets each. Paul Hardwick took 3 wickets for 46 runs from 14 overs, and Jon Best took 3 wickets for 50 runs from 10 overs. Adam Greenwood took 3 catches & Paul Hardwick took a further catch from his own bowling. Steeton's reply was led by skipper Alex Howarth who scored 49 runs from 105 deliveries, including 8 boundaries. Alex shared a stand of 61 with Aussie Nick Carroll, who smashed a quick-fire 35 from 26 deliveries, including 8 boundaries. John Akrigg scored 40 runs from 52 deliveries, and the other batters to reach double figures were Neil Spragg (20), Jon Best (15) & Paul Spragg (13). Having lost too many wickets Steeton had to bat out for a draw: they finished on 197 runs for the 8 wickets from their 50 overs.
Horsforth 101 a/o in 31.4 overs
Steeton 105-1 in 16.3 overs
Steeton 1st XI returned to the top of division B of the Airedale & Wharfedale Cricket League with a 9 wicket defeat of early pacesetters Horsforth. After winning the toss on a green wicket skipper Alex Howarth asked the visitors to bat and had an immediate return when Jonathan Best took 2 wickets in as many balls in his second over. Paul Hardwick at the other end grabbed one wicket to leave Horsforth 31-3 after only 7 overs. After a period of reconciliation the introduction of Gary Boulton brought a swift end to the Horsforth innings as the ball continued to seam around: On his 40th birthday Gary ended with figures of 6.4-2-14-4. Paul Hardwick bowled unchanged at the other end finishing with figures of 16-6-46-4. Horsforth had managed only 101 runs all out from 31.4 overs. In response Steeton lost Paul Spragg for 13, but when Aussie Nick Carroll (58* not out) joined his skipper Alex Howarth (29*) he proceeded to hammer the Horsforth attack to all parts to bring an early conclusion. Steeton passed the Horsforth total in only 16.3 overs, and losing just 1 wicket to reach 105 runs, meaning Steeton did not use any of its own overs in gaining the 6 points.
Follifoot 111-2 in 20 overs
Steeton
Steeton 1st XI progressed to the Semi-final of the Waddilove, by virtue of being able to bowl straight! Follifoot were 19 runs without loss after 8 overs when we first had rain. With the match reduced to 35 overs Follifoot resumed and were at 111 runs for 2 wickes after 20 overs when the heavens opened. The pitch was unfit to resume and a ball out was agreed: Nick Carroll went first and hit the middle stump with his first ball, narrowly missing with his second. Follifoot missed both. Enter Gary Boulton with two hits out of two - middle stump then leg stump. Follifoot missed both. Lee Spragg then missed with his two - the first one by a whisker. Follifoot missed both. Jon Best missed with both balls. Again Follifoot missed with both balls, which meant Steeton were 3-0 up with no need for final bowler (Paul Hardwick was our final "nervous" man). On another Sunday badly affected by heavy thunder storms, the result of yet another cup match was decided by good fortune, rather than cricket. A semi-final visit to North Leeds on 17th July is their reward.
Ilkley 209 a/o in 48.3 overs
Steeton 206 a/o in 49.4 overs
In a match that was all-but won, Steeton 1st XI snatched defeat from the jaws of victory, and managed to lose by a mere 3 runs to lowly Ilkley. Chasing Ilkley's 209 runs all out in 48.3 overs, Steeton fell just short on 206 runs all out in 49.4 overs. Ilkey had been well contained by 'career best' bowling from James Emmott, whose 14.3 overs yielded 6 wickets for 43 runs. He was ably assisted by Alex Gledhill, who took 3 wickets for 77 runs from 16 overs & the other wicket fell to Jon Best (1-38). There were 2 catches for Paul Hardwick, keeper Neil Wilson took 1 catch & 1 stumping, and there was a catch each for Adam Greenwood, Alex Howarth & Neil Spragg. In reply Steeton looked like they were coasting to victory with a 3rd wicket stand of 90 runs between Aussie Nick Carroll, whose 73 runs came from just 58 deliveries and included 15 boundaries; and Neil Spragg, whose steady 33 runs included 5 boundaries. A 6th wicket stand of 55 runs between Jon Best & Adam Greenwood, who both scored 30 runs, did appear to have sealed victory. But a late order collapse, which saw 4 wickets go down for the addition of just 11 runs, was Steeton's undoing as they finished 3 runs short. This lapse means that at the halfway stage of the season, Steeton slip back to 3rd place in the B division.
Bardsey 218-6 in 50 overs
Steeton 164 a/o in 45.5 overs
For the second week in a row Steeton 1st XI have been beaten. Chasing 218 runs at Bardsey they fell over 50 runs short on 164 all out. Bowling first Steeton struggled to contain Bardsey with only Aussie Nick Carroll, 3 wickets for 32 runs from 11 overs, and Paul Hardwick, 3 wickets for 42 runs from 10 overs, returning respectable figures. The other wicket fell to Gary Boulton (1-40), and the other bowlers were expensive. Bardsey scored a respectable 218 runs for 7 wickets from their 50 overs. In reply Steeton had reached 52 before losing their first wicket, but then slumped to 59 runs for 4 wickets. Opener Paul Spragg top-scored with 41 runs from 58 deliveries, including 7 boundaries, and the late middle order put together reasonable scores of John Akrigg (33 runs from 43 balls), Jon Best (25 runs from 46 balls) & Gary Boulton (33* runs from 46 balls). But with none of these able to convert a good start into a good score Steeton were losing too many wickets. In the end a the tail could not survive and Steeton were all out for 164 in 44.5 overs, and Steeton lost by 54 runs. Steeton remain in third place in the table, but will need to return to winning ways if they are to push for promotion.
Collingham 241-6 in 50 overs
Steeton 243-2 in 41.4 overs
Steeton 1st XI returned to winning ways with an impressive win at home to Collingham. Batting first on a good track on a sunny day Collingham scored 241 runs for 6 wickets in their 50 overs; on many Aire-Wharfe grounds this may seem a good score - but on a good track with a lightning fast outfield at Steeton it was a reachable total. The bowling was figures do not make good reading except for Neil Spragg with 3 wickets for 43 runs from 12 overs. Paul Spragg (1-30), Jon Best (1-33) & Paul Hardwick (1-75) took a wicket each. Five of the six wickets to fall were caught; 2 for keeper Neil Wilson and 1 each for James Emmott, Nick Carroll & skipper Alex Howarth. Steeton's batting reply was excellent. Opening the batting John Akrigg was the star with the bat, carrying his bat & scoring an unbeaten century. John's 105* not out came from 132 deliveries and included 4 sixes and 16 fours. John was the backbone of the innings, as he shared an opening stand of 64 with Paul Spragg, who scored 37 runs from 45 deliveries including 7 boundaries. John then shared a second wicket stand of 87 with Aussie Nick Carroll, who scored 33 runs from 32 deliveries with 6 boundaries. John than shared an unbeaten third wicket stand of 92 runs with Neil Spragg, who smashed 43* not out from 34 deliveries, with 8 fours. Steeton cruised past Collingham's total, reaching 243 runs for just 2 wickets with 8.2 overs to spare. Steeton's win means they have closed the gap to 3 points between themselves in 3rd place and Collingham, who currently occupy the 2nd promotion place.
Menston 288-5 in 50 overs
Steeton 290-3 in 41 overs
Steeton 1st XI continued their return to form with a great batting display at Menston. Steeton asked hosts Menston to bat first on what looked an excellent batting wicket. The gamble appeared to be paying off when fine bowling spells from Paul Hardwick and Lee Spragg restricted Menston to 60-2 after 20 overs. However an outstanding partnership of 243 between overseas player Hutton (105) and Mehdi (118) accelerated the scoring significantly and at the end of the innings Menston had posted a daunting 288 from its 50 overs. In reply Steeton rose to the challenge led by Paul Spragg who scored 54 from only 39 balls. When he was out the score was 103 from only 16 overs. Overseas player Nick Carroll was out LBW shortly after which brought Neil Spragg to the crease to partner John Akrigg. These two continued to score freely adding 177 for the third wicket at 8 runs per over. John Akrigg scored 103 from 96 balls, his second successive century, before being out caught with only 6 runs needed. Neil Spragg hit a boundary to win the game and take his score to 103 from only 76 balls. What appeared to be a daunting target had been overhauled with 9 overs remaining. The win takes Steeton to second place in the Airedale & Wharfedale 2nd division after they knocked off the mammoth total with ease for the loss of 3 wickets. Both Steeton & Menston had 2 centurians, making a remarkable 4 centuries scored in this match! This win has lifted Steeton back to second place in the league; a timely return to winning ways!
Steeton 208-8 in 45 overs
North Leeds 212-4 in 43 overs
Steeton are out of the Waddilove Cup when they lost to North Leeds by 6 wickets. Steeton chose to bat first in the Waddilove Cup semi final away at North Leeds. James Procter coming in to the side for Paul Spragg was out early. However John Akrigg carrying on his fine form scored freely with overseas player Nick Carroll to add 43 for the second wicket before Carroll, trying to dominate, gave a straight forward catch for a quickfire 22. Akrigg was then joined by Neil Spragg and the Steeton support hoped they could have a similar partnership to the day before. The score board was ticking over nicely as they added 55 in 12 overs before Akrigg was caught at deep square leg for 46. Jonathan Best was caught behind for 1 bringing Gary Boulton to the crease. Spragg and Boulton then looked to be taking Steeton to a decent total adding 46 together before both fell within the space of an over. The momentum of the innings was lost, however Lee Spragg hit Steeton back in to the game with 24 from only 18 deliveries. Skipper Howarth 26 not out with support from James Emmott and Neil Wilson then saw Steeton to 208 from its 45 overs. Despite being disappointed that the total was 20 short of what they ideally wanted, Steeton thought they had enough runs to cause the hosts serious problems. Superb opening spells from Paul Hardwick and Jonathan Best backed by some high quality fielding raised these hopes and at 23 for 2 after 7 overs Steeton were in the driving seat. Alldridge and Kellaway then mounted a period of consolidation for North Leeds however the introduction of Gary Boulton to the attack brought immediate rewards when Allridge was caught behind by Neil Wilson with the score on 61. Kellaway was then joined by the experienced Leach and these two slowly turned the game in favour of the hosts adding 99 for the 4th wicket. Just when it appeared the game was sliding away, Steeton got a lifeline when Paul Hardwick had Leach (38) caught behind with the score on 160 and 9 overs left. This brought Steve Wales to the wicket playing in his fifth Waddilove cup semi final, with the previous four all ending in defeat. He rose to the challenge with 19 not out partnering the outstanding Kellaway (94 not out) past the Steeton total with 2 overs to spare. Although disappointed that they had not scored enough runs Steeton should be proud of the way the players bowled and fielded.

Steeton strengthened its promotion bid with a tense victory against local rivals Silsden. In a game reduced to 27 overs per side because of rain, Steeton won the toss and asked the visitors to bat. Jonathan Best gave his team the perfect start by taking the wickets of C Barrett and Chris Meehan in the first over with short balls caught behind the wicket by keeper Neil Wilson and 2nd slip Paul Spragg respectively. Craig Thornton (39) and Tim Sugden then had a partnership of 47 before Thornton was run out. Sugden then took command of a 63 run partnership with David Jackson (15) before being trapped lbw by Best (10-1-47-3) for a fine 59. Alex Gledhill restrained the Silsden run chase at the end of the innings finishing with 5-0-23-3. Silsden had posted 140 runs for 6 wickets in 27 overs, meaning Steeton needed to score at over 5 runs per over. In reply Steeton lost in-form opener John Akrigg for 10 runs; caught at square leg off the bowling of Chris Walker. Pool 231-5 in 48.2 overs
Steeton's push for promotion to division A was dealt a blow away at leaders Pool. After being asked to bat Steeton got off to a solid start from youngsters James Procter (56) and Ajmal Patankar (35) who put on 101 for the first wicket before both fell within the space of an over. Neil Spragg and Aussie Nick Carroll then added 65 runs for the third wicket before Nick was bowled by a grubber for 32 runs. John Akrigg (3) and John Best (4) both fell chasing quick runs. Neil Spragg (63 not out) and cousin Lee Spragg (15 not out) then saw the innings to completion with several huge blows. At the end of its 50 overs Steeton had posted a respectable 228 runs for 5 wickets. In reply Pool's overseas star Simon Dart dominated an opening partnership of 116 runs with Singleton. A solid spell from 15 year old Stephen Roberts helped put Pool under pressure and Nick Carroll earned the reward when he bowled Singleton (35). However Dart and Wood continued the good work for Pool before the outstanding Carroll (16-2-52-3) gave his team mates hope when he caused Dart to play on for a fine 96 and trapped Wood leg before for 35. Further doubts were caused for the hosts when both Lee Spragg (10-1-50-1) and Roberts (9-2-33-1) took wickets when they returned to the attack. However Carleton & Wilkinson saw Pool through to take the division B championship with one over remaining. Pool finished with 231 runs for 5 wickets in 48.2 overs. Steeton are now just 5 points clear of third placed Collingham with 3 games remaining.
Calverley 263 a/o in 47.2 overs
Steeton 257-6 in 50 overs
Steeton's push for promotion to division A was dealt a further blow as they could only manage a losing draw (2-4) at home to Calverley. They now lead 3rd placed Collingham by a single point going into the last 2 games. Despite losing a wicket first ball, Calverley piled on the runs, eventually ending all out for 263 runs in 47.2 overs. Steeton used 7 different bowlers to try to contain, but it was not until the score was 258 runs that they were able to shift Calverley's opener J Brown, who scored 132. Jon Best was the pick of the bowlers as he collected 3 wickets for 29 runs from 8 overs. There was 2 wickets each for Aussie Nick Carroll (2-13), James Emmott (2-44) & Gary Boulton (2-56), and the other wicket went to Paul Hardwick (1-56). With 52 overs to Chase the 263 runs set by Calverley Steeton got off to a solid start with 85 runs on the board before losing opener John Akrigg, who had scored 60 runs from 60 deliveries, including 2 sixes and 9 fours. Standing in for the injured Paul Spragg, his opening partner was skipper Alex Howarth, who went on to top-score with a steady 78 runs scored from 109 deliveries and included 2 sixes and 11 fours. There were 2 run outs in the frenetic scramble for runs; Aussie Nick Carroll (18) and Gary Boulton (16). A fine innings of 50 runs from 70 deliveries & including 6 fours, by Jon Best nearly saw Steeton home, but when he fell in the last over Steeton were a tantalising 6 runs short following a dramatic run chase. Steeton finished on 257 runs for 6 wickets from 52 overs, and collect 2 points from a valiant losing draw.
Horsforth 197 a/o in 48 overs
Steeton 198-9 in 40.2 overs
Batting first Horsforth got off to a solid start and had reached 68 runs before the introduction of Aussie Nick Carroll, who immediately broke the opening partnership and continued to bowl an unchanged spell that devastated the Horsforth batting. Nick finished with a tremendous 8 wickets for 60 runs from 19 overs. Horsforth had crumbled to 197 all out in 48 overs, with the other 2 wickets falling to Jon Best (2-33). In this 'must win' match, Steeton's reply was very shaky, and quickly subsided to 52 runs for 5 wickets, but opener John Akrigg was still there. John was the rock of the innings as he watched wickets tumble steadily from the other end. He shared a 6th wicket stand of 59 runs with skipper Alex Howarth and a 7th wicket stand of 39 runs with Lee Spragg, who scored 25 runs including 4 fours. When last man Stephen Roberts came to the crease with 8 runs still required John Akrigg's instructions were clear: survive the last 3 balls of this over and you won't have to face another ball! Stephen kept his part of the bargain and John blasted the first 2 balls of the next over for consecutive boundaries to win the match. John had almost single handed carried the Steeton batting and finished with an impressive 123* runs not out, which included 1 six and 23 fours.
Steeton 149 a/o in 45.3 overs - 1 pt
Ilkley 122-9 in 42 overs - 1 pt
A thrilling match that swung both ways was brought to a rather unsatisfactory conclusion as both sides agreed the light had faded too much to continue. Steeton batted first and having had a stand of 41 runs before losing their first wicket, they then collapsed to 80 runs for 8 wickets, but recovered to finish all out for 149 runs in 45.3 overs. Steeton's late recovery was a result of a fine innings of great control by Lee Spragg, who top-scored with 39 runs from 86 deliveries with 1 six & 2 fours. Lee shared important late order stands of 36 runs with Neil Wilson (7) and 28 runs with Paul Hardwick (12*). Earlier in the innings Aussie Nick Carroll had scored a valuable 31 runs from 42 deliveries, with 4 boundaries, and openers Paul Spragg and John Akrigg had contributed 20 runs and 21 runs respectively. The damage for Ilkley was done by Richard Harrison, who took an incredible 10 wickets for 48 runs - 6 of his wickets being caught by keeper J Varley. In reply Ilkley lost wickets regularly, and a double-wicket maiden by Gary Boulton helped to finish-off the middle order. In the gathering gloom and with Steeton knowing they only required a single point, with the Collingham game had already been a victim of the weather, Steeton brought back their opening fast bowlers. Jon Best & Paul Hardwick then took 4 wickets with the score on 122, and with Ilkley 9 wickets down and requiring another 27 runs in the dark, a halt was called to proceedings. Jon Best finished with 3 wickets for 29 runs and Paul Hardwick a further 3 wickets for 32 runs. The other bowlers to collect wickets were Gary Boulton (2-15) and Nick Carroll (1-14). The single point collected by Steeton was enough to guarantee promotion back to the A division, after a 2 year sojourn in division B.
Second XI 2005
Follifoot 118 a/o in 47.5 overs
Steeton 122-7 in 47.2 overs
The Steeton 2nd XI juggernaut continued its unstoppable journey on into the A Division. They were too strong for Follifoot and took all the points in the fixture at Rudding Park. Bowling first having won the toss Steeton restricted Follifoot to 118 all out in 47.5 overs. David Atkinson justified bowling unchanged at one end by taking a magnificent 7 wickets for 45 runs from 24 overs He was backed-up by the ever dependable David Cook, who took the other 3 wickets for 29 runs from 11.5 overs, as well as the only catch of the match. 7 of the Follifoot team were clean bowled. Although this was not a great score the wicket was damp (and so slow & low) and the outfield soggy. In reply Steeton got off to a steady start with a 51 opening stand between Ajmal Patankar (20) and top-scorer James Procter, whose 25 included 5 boundaries. No-one looked really settled on the pitch, but everyone chipped in with vital runs as the target neared. David Robinson scored 15, skipper Robert saw us home with an unbeaten 11*, and Adrian Emmott scored 10. Steeton reached the total for the loss of 7 wickets from 47.2 overs, to collect all the available points from this fixture.
Steeton 236-2 in 30 overs
Adel 144-5 in 30 overs
Steeton 2nd XI continued their good progress with a crushing 5-1 Winning Draw at home against Adel. In a rain effected match, Steeton batted first and absolutely annihilated the Adel bowling. Opener Ajmal Patankar started the ball rolling with 40 runs from 28 deliveries, including 3 sixes & 1 four, but the highlight of the match was a superb 163 third-wicket stand between David Robinson (89*) and Oliver Gledhill (92*). Oliver Gledhill's 92* not out came from just 43 deliveries, and included 4 sixes & 10 fours. David Robinson's 89* not out came from 91 deliveries and included 4 sixes & 6 fours. With the match reduced to a 30 overs match due to the rain, Steeton closed their innings on 236 runs for 2 wickets from 30 overs - averaging almost 8 runs per over! This total proved far too much for Adel, who finished their innings on 144 runs for 5 wickets from 30 overs, to collect just 1 point from the encounter. David Atkinson again bowled unchanged from one end and picked-up 3 wicket for 67 runs from 15 overs. Stephen Roberts (1-29) and David Cook (1-39), were the only other bowlers used. Skipper Robert Wynn & vice-skipper Mark Chapman each took a catch, and two fielding points went to James Procter.
Steeton 201 a/o in 49.5 overs
Burley-in-Wharfedale 127-8 in 50 overs
Steeton 2nd XI continued their good start to the season with a Winning Draw (5-1) away at Hodson Park. Batting first Steeton scored 201 all out in 49.5 overs, with a number of good contributions. Top-scorer was new-recruit Julian Higginson with a grafting 47, which included 1 six & 4 fours. Late down the order David Atkinson smashed 39 runs from 34 deliveries, including 1 six & 5 fours, David Cook also joined the party with 32 runs from 31 deliveries, with 1 six & 3 fours. Dependable skipper Robert Wynn scored 22, and both openers reached double figures: James Procter (18) & Ajmal Patankar (15). In reply Burley got off to the worst possible start losing a wicket from the first delivery. They quickly lost hope of surpassing Steeton's total & settled early for batting out for a single point. David Atkinson was again the pick of the bowlers taking 3 wickets for 36 runs from 14 overs. Paul Hardwick (2-16) & David Cook (2-19) collected 2 wickets each, and Stephen Roberts (1-22) collected the other wicket to fall. Showing little ambition Burley finished on 127 runs for 8 wickets from 50 overs. Keeper Julian Higginson took the only 2 catches and James Procter was awarded 2 fielding points. Steeton 2nd XI are now 5 points clear at the top of Division A.
Addingham 32 a/o in 22.5 overs
Steeton 33-2 in 7.4 overs
Despite frequent rain breaks Steeton 2nd XI crushed Addingham to breeze through to the next round of the Birtwhistle Cup. Addingham won the toss and elected to bat, and that was the last thing they won in the match. Addingham never came to terms with Steeton's young bowlers: 15 year olds, Stephen Roberts (3-4) & Matthew Hagyard (3-9), took 3 wickets apiece, and 18 year old Matthew Thomas (3-10) took a further 3 wickets as Addingham were reduced to 32 all out in their 22.5 overs. Dave Cook took the last wicket with a comfortable caught & bowled. Six of the Addingham batsmen were out for ducks, and eight of them were clean bowled. In reply Steeton threw away 2 early wickets before they had reached 3 runs, but the experienced David Robinson (20*) and skipper Robert Wynn (8*) saw Steeton home comfortably for an 8 wicket win in just 7.4 overs. Steeton 2nd XI now meet the winners of the match between Upper Wharfedale & Rawdon, which was rained-off & will be played on 15th May.
Steeton 207 a/o in 48 overs
North Leeds 208-3 in 47.1 overs
Without the services of 3 of their regular players Steeton 2nd XI crashed at the hands of North Leeds. Winning the toss and deciding to bat, Steeton lost wickets regularly, with most batters getting 'played-in', but no-one continuing to make a major contribution. The ever-dependable Dave Cook was Steeton top-scorer with 47 runs from 49 deliveries, which included 8 boundaries. Opener James Procter scored 39 runs, including 1 six & 6 fours; David Robinson scored 23; Robert Wynn scored 17; Adrian Emmott scored 16; Mark Chapman scored 14; and down the order Phil Barrett scored 12*, from 11 deliveries with 1 six. Steeton's innings closed on 207 all out in 48 overs. Without opening bowler Dave Atkinson the Steeton bowling lacked the usual penetration, but they looked in with a chance when North Leeds were 107 for 3, but they were not able to dislodge opener "Saj" Hussain, & an unbroken 4th wicket partnership of 101 saw North Leeds comfortably home. North Leeds passed the Steeton total with 7 wickets & 4 overs to spare. The pick of the Steeton bowling was skipper Robert Wynn, whose 2 wickets cost 21 runs in 6 overs. Matthew Hagyard had earlier bowled North Leeds' opener to give Steeton hope, and he finished with 1-45 from 8 overs. James Procter took a stinging catch from the bowling of Robert Wynn, & the fielding point went to Stephen Roberts.
Rawdon 95 a/o in 33.1 overs
Steeton 99-2 in 16.4 overs
The Steeton 2nd XI juggernaut returned to winning ways with a convincing trouncing of last year's Birtwhistle cup winners, Rawdon. Rawdon batted first and only managed 95 runs all out in 33.1 overs. David Atkinson bowled through the innings and took 5 wickets for 40 runs, David Wynn took 4 wickets for 35 runs, and Stephen Roberts took the other wicket to fall. Phil Barrett took 4 catches in the slips to claim 2 league fielding points. Steeton then proceeded to knock-off the runs in rapid time, thanks largely to opener Ajmal Patankar who scored 58 runs from 61 deliveries, which included 2 sixes & 7 fours. James Procter scored 14 runs & there were 19 extras. Steeton passed Rawdon's total in just 16.4 overs for the loss of just 2 wickets, to collect all 6 points. A valuable win in a week when most matches were abandoned, and means Steeton are again top of the league.
Steeton 201-8 in 45 overs
Upper Wharfedale 128-6 in 33 overs
Steeton 2nd XI were dumped out of the Birtwhistle Cup on a badly rain affected match by the run rate rule. Steeton lost the toss and batted first; building the innings on a solid base and increasing to a big-hitting finale - which saw them to a good total of 201 runs for 8 wickets in their 45 overs. The major contribution came from Jonathan Smith, whose 59 came from 67 deliveries, and included 3 sixes & 6 fours. The dependable Dave Cook scored 32 runs from 24 deliveries, which included 1 six & 3 fours, and there were contributions from skipper David Robinson (24), Phil Barrett (23), Robert Wynn (19) and Matthew Hagyard (11*). In reply Upper Wharfedale got off to a faster start than Steeton and were losing wickets when the rains came. Each break for rain knocked off Steeton's most prolific overs as the match was reduced by 1 over for every 3 minutes lost, and Upper Wharfedale were in command as they kept track of how many they needed to be. When the rain finally curtailed the match Upper Wharfedale had batted for 33 overs and scored 128 runs while losing 6 wickets. After 33 overs Steeton had been only 116 and so lost by 12 runs. It is interesting to note that on the Duckworth-Lewis Method Steeton would have won this match by 30 runs! (If anyone would like to download a small Duckworth-Lewis calculator then click on this link for a zipped download.) David Robinson had Steeton's best bowling figures with 2 wickets for 36 runs, and there was a wicket each for Jonathan Smith (1-7), Matthew Hagyard (1-11), Stephen Roberts (1-26) and Dave Cook (1-41). It is a curious anomaly of the current rules that Upper Wharfedale's overseas player, who had played for their 1st XI the previous round of the Waddilove Cup and lost to Rawdon, was now available to play for their 2nd XI in the second round of the Birtwhistle Cup. He kept wicket, then bowled his 9 overs and his unbeaten 54 is the major reason why Steeton are no longer in this competition.
Bilton 232-9 in 50 overs
Steeton 233-3 in 48.2 overs
This must have been one of the best wins for Steeton 2nd XI juggernaut. Bilton batted first and looked like reaching a truly mammoth total when they had an opening stand of 131, but fine bowling in the last 15 overs restricted them to just 232 runs for 9 wickets in their 50 overs. With a number of juniors in as replacements - and in fact opening the bowling with two 15 year olds on a good batting track, this was a great achievement. The pick of the bowlers was Stephen Roberts, who took 3 wickets for 42 runs from 15 overs, but special mention must be given to skipper Robert Wynn, who bowled 9 tight overs at the end of the Bilton innings and took 2 wickets for just 27 runs. David Cook also picked up 2 wickets for 77 runs. Bilton lost 2 wickets to direct hits from Robert Wynn in the field, which earned him a league fielding point - Scott Hanson was also awarded a league fielding point. In reply Steeton 2nd XI with a much weakened batting line-up put together a fine collection of scores; opener James Procter was the first out and he had contributed 19 runs in an opening stand of 56. His opening partner Ajmal Patankar was the next to go having shared a further 45 run stand with skipper Robert Wynn. Ajmal had scored 61 runs in just 61 deliveries, which included 1 six & 10 fours. Robert then shared a 66 run third wicket stand with Phil Barrett, who scored 35 runs. A further unbeaten 66 run stand between Robert & Dave Cook saw Steeton comfortably home. Dave Cook scored 30* not out from 29 deliveries, which included 1 six & 2 fours; and skipper Roberts Wynn top-scored in this remarkable match with an unbeaten 68* from 88 balls, which included 8 boundaries. Steeton had knocked-off 233 runs for the loss of just 3 wickets from 48.2 overs to collect all 6 points, which means they remain top of the league.
Guiseley 153 a/o in 49.5 overs
Steeton 154-4 in 43.3 overs
The Steeton 2nd XI juggernaut rolled over Guiseley without too much effort. Guiseley were asked to bat first and were soon in trouble at 44 for 4. At 108 for 8 they looked down and out, but a rearguard action saw them reach 153 all out with just 1 ball of their innings unused. Three of Steeton's bowlers took 3 wickets: David Robinson took 3 wickets for 31 runs from 11 overs, Stephen Roberts took 3 wickets for 42 runs & Dave Cook took 3 wickets for 50 from 14 overs. Matthew Hagyard (1-22) took the other wicket to fall. Keeper Julian Higginson took 1 catch & 4 stumpings, and Phil Barrett took a catch in the slips. Guiseley's total of 153 was never going to be too testing for this efficient side, and so it proved as Steeton coasted past Guiseley's total with 5 overs & 6 wickets to spare. Ajmal Patankar top-scored with 46 runs from 78 deliveries, and included 2 sixes & 5 fours. Julian Higginson's aggressive assault saw him score 39 runs from just 30 deliveries, which included 5 fours and 1 enormous six! Matthew Thomas put himself into contention for a more permanent place in the side with an unbeaten 28* scored from 35 deliveries and including 1 six & 2 fours. The other players to reach double figures were David Robinson (11) & James Procter (10). Steeton scored 154 runs for 4 wickets from 43.3 overs, and once again collect all 6 points to remain top of the league.
Steeton 155-9 in 50 overs
Pool 108 a/o in 35.5 overs
Steeton remain top of the league with a good win over bottom team Pool. With many team "regulars" unavailable stand-in skipper Mark Chapman has maintained his 100% record as captain. Batting first Steeton scored 155 runs for the loss of 9 wickets in their 50 overs. Top-scoring for Steeton was Julian Higginson, whose 50 runs included 1 six & 7 fours. Opener Ajmal Patankar scored 22 runs and shared a 2nd wicket partnership of 43 runs with David Robinson (18). Oliver Gledhill also scored 18 runs and he shared a 4th wicket partnership of 31 runs with Matthew Thomas (14). Valuable runs down the batting order were added by Stephen Roberts (11*) and Matthew Hagyard (10), as they 'stuck around' in support of Julian. Steeton's bowlers all performed well, and once a 3rd wicket stand of 53 was broken Pool crumbled to 108 all out in 35.5 overs. The roll of honour for Steeton's bowlers was led by Matthew Hagyard, whose 4 overs conceded 4 runs as he collected 3 wickets. David Wynn took 3 wickets for 34 runs, David Robinson took 2 wickets for 31 runs & Stephen Roberts took 2 wickets for 33 runs. The bowlers were well supported n the field, with 3 catches for skipper Mark Chapman and 2 catches for James Procter earning them a fielding point each, and a further catch for Ajmal Patankar.
Green Lane 233-9 in 50 overs
Steeton 217-8 in 50 overs
Steeton 2nd XI had to settle for 2 points from a losing draw at home to Green Lane. Asked to bat on a good pitch Green Lane looked to be in trouble at 32 for 3, but a 5th wicket stand of 133 helped them to a good total of 233 runs for 9 wickets in their 50 overs. Stephen Roberts was the pick of the bowlers with 3 wickets for 39 runs from 9 overs. David Atkinson took 2 wickets for 57 runs, David Wynn took 2 wickets for 66 runs, & David Robinson collected 1 wicket for 32 runs. Julian Higginson took 3 catches & a smart run out from an excellent throw by David Atkinson. The other catches were taken by David Robinson, Dave Cook & Oliver Gledhill. In reply Steeton's top batting order self-destructed, and Steeton were soon just 58 runs having lost their top 4 batters. The rot was slowed by Julian Higginson who scored 40 runs from 45 deliveries, which included 8 boundaries. It was left to David Atkinson batting at number 9 to top-score with an excellent unbeaten innings of 50* not out from 78 deliveries, which included 1 six & 6 fours. David shared an 8th wicket partnership of 63 with Phil Barrett, who scored a steady 29. Dave Cook scored 23, opener Ajmal Patankar scored 21, David Wynn scored 13* & Oliver Gledhill scored 12. Steeton finished a tantalising 16 runs short, on 217 runs for 8 wickets from their 50 overs.
Steeton 270-6 in 50 overs
Kirkstall Educational 158-9 in 50 overs
Steeton 2nd XI had by far the better of this encounter at Kirkstall. On a blazing hot day on a beautiful batting track Kirkstall won the toss, but decided to let Steeton have first use of the wicket as they toiled in the sun. Steeton took full advantage of their generosity, as they built an opening stand of 91, before losing Ajmal Patankar for 47 runs, scored from 78 deliveries and including 1 six & 8 fours. His opening partner James Procter went on to score exactly 100 runs, from 141 deliveries and including 1 six and 15 fours, before he was stumped through sheer exhaustion. Oliver Gledhill scored a quickfire 37 runs from 27 deliveries (2 sixes & 4 fours), Julian Higginson added another 19, before skipper Robert Wynn came in and smashed a rapid unbeaten 40* runs, from just 25 deliveries, which included 3 sixes and 2 fours. Steeton had amassed a formidable 270 runs for the loss of 6 wickets from their 50 overs. In reply Kirkstall lost wickets regularly and from 60 for 4 they even gave up any real effort to score the 203 that would have secured them an extra point. They were 9 wickets down with 7 overs to go, but managed to grimly hold on for a single point. David Atkinson was again the pick of the bowlers, and he took 4 wickets from 13 overs while conceding 35 runs. Dave Cook bowled 15 tight overs, and he collected 3 wickets for just 12 runs. Stephen Roberts took the other wicket to fall as he returned figures of 1-38. Steeton collect another 5 point, as they remain run-away leaders of the A division, with another impressive performance. With nearest rivals Otley losing, Steeton are now 12 points clear at the top of division A: The juggernaut rumbles on!
Steeton 260-6 in 50 overs
Otley 196-6 in 50 overs
Playing against second placed Otley, Steeton 2nd XI had a 4-2 winning draw to pull further clear at the top of the A division. Put into bat first Steeton piled on the runs for the second week running. This week they finished with 260 runs for 6 wickets in 50 overs. The innings was built around a great second wicket partnership of 171 between James Procter, whose 76 came from 130 deliveries and included 12 fours, and David Robinson, whose 67 came from 101 deliveries and included 2 sixes & 4 fours. A typically aggressive knock of 35* not out by Julian Higginson came from just 23 deliveries, opener Ajmal Patankar scored 26 runs & Phil Barrett chipped in with 13 runs. The Otley reply was quickly subdued and with 2 wickets down for 30 runs their sights were set on the 195 runs, which would gain them the extra pointy from a losing draw. This they just managed to achieve despite a fine spell of bowling by David Cook (3-44) & Stephen Roberts (2-24). Matthew Hagyard took the other wicket to fall in a spell of 1-22. There were 2 catches for Phil Barrett, and one each for David Robinson, skipper Robert Wynn & keeper Justin Higginson. Otley finished on 196 runs for 6 wickets in 50 overs, and so Steeton collected 4 points from a winning draw. At the half-way stage of the season, Steeton are 12 points clear at the top of the A division. The juggernaut rumbles on!
Follifoot 125 a/o in 48.4 overs
Steeton 129-6 in 43.5 overs
Steeton 2nd XI made hard work of knocking-off just 125 runs, but having lost more wickets than they had expected Steeton ran out winners by 4 wickets with 8 overs to spare. Steeton won the toss and asked Follifoot to bat first on what looked like a good track. After reaching 39 before losing their first wickets Follifoot's middle order collapsed to 77 for 8. Some late hitting brought some respectability to the score, as Follifoot were dismissed for 125 runs all out in 48.4 overs. Stephen Roberts bowled another tight 8 over spell, which saw him pick up 3 wickets for 14 runs. David Atkinson also claimed 3 wickets for a mere 26 runs from 14.4 overs. David Wynn took 2 wickets for 34 runs & Alex Gledhill (1-13) took the other wicket to fall. The fielding was again of the highest quality, with excellent one-handed diving catches from David Atkinson & David Cook. Keeper Julian Higginson had 2 catches & 1 stumping. A further 3 sharp catches went to ground which would have compounded Follifoot's misery. With just 126 runs to score for victory Steeton were naturally confident, but when in-form opener Ajmal Patankar was needlessly run out for 12 with the score on 24 the nerves started to jangle. Tight bowling by Follifoot and rash hitting by some Steeton batsmen saw Steeton slip to 47 for 3. Alex Gledhill gritted out 46 runs from 79 deliveries including 8 boundaries, to top score for Steeton. Julian Higginson played a watchful innings of 22 runs from 49 deliveries, but it was left to experienced skipper Roberts Wynn to see Steeton to victory with an unbeaten 27* runs from 31 deliveries including 4 fours. Steeton scored 129 runs for the loss 6 wickets in 43.5 overs and collected a further 6 points to keep us 12 points clear at the top of the A division.
Steeton 188-9 in 50 overs
Adel 124 a/o in 44.4 overs
The Steeton 2nd XI juggernaut continued its relentless progress towards the A division championship, despite being deprived of their leading wicket taker (minor injury) and opening batter & second-top scorer (holiday). Asked to bat first Steeton scored 188 runs for 9 wickets in their 50 overs - a good total on a large field with slow outfield. Top-scorer for Steeton was opener Alex Gledhill, who scored a careful 33 runs from 73 deliveries, with 4 boundaries. Julian Higginson scored a valuable 30 runs from 48 deliveries, including 5 boundaries; skipper Robert Wynn scored 29 runs from 44 deliveries, with 3 fours; & Oliver Gledhill scored 27 runs from 32 deliveries with 4 fours. The other batters to reach double figures were Dave Cook (14), Phil Barrett (12*), Ajmal Patankar (11) and Matthew Hagyard (11*), who provided the highlight of the innings plundering a 'big' six onto the pavilion roof in the last over. Adel's innings showed little resistance with only Adel's Brian Hall (38) showing any determination. Wickets fell regularly and with their last man already on a plane to Benidorm, Adel were all out 64 runs short. Adel finished on 124 runs for 9 wickets (all out) in 44.4 overs. Stephen Roberts was the chief wicket-taker, with his two 6-over spells giving him figures of 5 wickets for 25 runs from 12 overs. Dave Cook took 2 wickets for 39 runs, and there was a wicket apiece for Matthew Hagyard (1-5) and David Wynn (1-28). The bowlers were well supported in the field, with 2 excellent catches in the deep for Ajmal Patankar, another 2 for keeper Julian Higginson, and a catch each for Robert Wynn & David Robinson. This 6 points mean Steeton are now 14 points clear at the top of the A division.
Steeton 275-7 in 50 overs
Burley-in-Wharfedale 248-8 in 50 overs
The Steeton 2nd XI juggernaut is continuing its relentless progress towards the A division championship. Steeton won the toss and chose to bat first on an excellent track, & lightning fast outfield, at Summerhill Lane. They notched up 275 runs for 7 wickets from their 50 overs, thanks largely to a steady 85 runs from 120 deliveries, with 12 fours, from opener James Procter; & 59 runs from 96 deliveries with 9 fours from his opening partner Ajmal Patankar. James & Ajmal shared an opening stand of 121 from 27 overs. David Robinson then scored a steady 19, but with Steeton only progressing to 164 runs from 36 overs they really had not scored quickly enough in these conditions. The last 14 overs though added 111 runs; due to some rapid cameo innings from Steeton's middle order: Dave Cook scored 29 off 13 balls, Oliver Gledhill scored 20 off just 8 balls, Phil Barrett scored 20* not out off 11 balls & Roberts Wynn scored 12 from 9 balls. In reply Burley batted extremely well and they too had a century opening partnership from the first 20 overs. But for losing wickets at vital points, they may well have been able to mount a more serious assault on the Steeton total. At the end of their innings they were 8 wickets down for 248 runs - just 27 runs short - with Steeton on the defensive in this intriguing match. The pick of the bowlers was Dave Cook, who took 4 wickets for 75 runs from 18 overs. Dave Wynn also bowled 18 overs and he took 2 wickets for 75 runs. Stephen Roberts (1-56) took the other wicket to fall & he also collected a comfortable catch. Steeton finished with a 4-2 winning draw which maintains their 14 point lead at the top of the A division.
North Leeds 132 a/o in 43.3 overs
Steeton 133-7 in 25.4 overs
The Steeton 2nd XI gained revenge for their only league defeat, when they convincingly beat North Leeds at the Homestead. Asked to bat first North Leeds struggled against the pace of David Wynn & David Atkinson. They both collected 5 wickets apiece, David Wynn (5-49) & David Atkinson (5-55) as North Leeds were dismissed for 132 runs all out in 43.3 overs. Phil Barrett & Dave Cook collected a fielding point each, with a smart catch in the slips by Phil Barrett & a fine one-handed diving catch at point by Dave Cook. Keeper Julian Higginson took a further 2 catches & Oliver Gledhill also took a nice catch. What should have a comfortable win for Steeton was made to look difficult as they lost 7 wickets chasing down the meagre North Leeds total. Dave Cook, promoted to opening batter, top-scored with 42 runs from 51 deliveries with 1 six & 5 fours. The rest of the strong middle order scored in the 'teens', but were unable to convert good starts into significant contributions: Julian Higginson (18), Robert Wynn (17), Oliver Gledhill (16) & David Robinson (14). Despite making had work of it, Steeton scored 133 runs for 7 wickets from 25.4 overs and so won by 3 wickets with 30 overs spare to collect a further 6 points and stay run-away leaders of the A division - now 18 points clear!
Rawdon 226-7 in 50 overs
Steeton 228-3 in 43.1 overs
Stand-in skipper Mark Chapman maintained his 100% record of wins, with the comprehensive demolition of 3rd place Rawdon. Having lost the toss Rawdon were asked to bat first and scored a reasonable 226 runs for 7 wickets from their 50 overs. David Robinson was the pick of the depleted bowling attack - he took 3 wickets for 37 runs from 13 overs. The canny left-arm spin of Mick Wilson captured a further 2 wickets for 53 runs from 14 overs. Phil Barrett's 2 catches earned him 2 league fielding points, and Ajmal Patankar also collected 1 league fielding point. Skipper Mark Chapman took a further catch, and the pressure forced 2 run outs, including a great effort from Matthew Thomas, with just 1 stump to aim at! The Steeton 2nd XI juggernaut rolled on thanks largely to a spectacular batting display, which saw a third-wicket stand of 143 runs between James Procter (88*) and Oliver Gledhill (95). James' unbeaten 88* runs came for 126 deliveries, and included 1 six & 12 fours, and Oliver's 95 runs were blitzed from just 75 deliveries and included 3 sixes & 13 fours. When Oliver was unfortunately stumped just short of his century, James went on to share an unbeaten stand fourth-wicket of 47 runs with Mick Wilson, who finished on 23* not out. Steeton cruised to 228 runs for 3 wickets from just 43.1 overs, and maintain their pace-setting at the top of the A division. With just 6 games of the season remaining Steeton 2nd XI are now an impressive 23 points clear!
Steeton 126 a/o in 38 overs
Bilton 129-1 in 21.4 overs
A below strength Steeton 2nd XI were comprehensively out-played in all departments by their nearest rivals Bilton. Asked to bat first on a wicket with uneven bounce Steeton could only manage 126 runs all out from 38 overs. Playing watchfully David Robinson top-scored with 39 runs. The only other players to reach double figures were Phil Barrett (24) & Ajmal Patankar (22). With the wicket still misbehaving, but getting easier, Steeton's bowlers were not as effective as Bilton's, and only managed to take 1 wicket as Bilton coasted home reaching 129 runs for 1 wicket in just 21.4 overs. Matthew Thomas (1-22) took the only wicket to fall with a splendid caught & bowled. Bilton have closed Steeton's lead to 17 points, with another 5 games to play.
Steeton - 1 pt
Guiseley - 1 pt
Along with every other match in their division Steeton 2nd XI's match with Guiseley was rained-off. With every team gaining 1 point, Steeton's gap of 17 points is maintained as we move into the last 4 games of the season.
Pool 122 a/o in 36 overs
Steeton 125-2 in 25.5 overs
Steeton 2nd XI moved closer to their first ever division A championship, with a comprehensive demolition of Pool. Pool chose to bat and were soon in trouble as they were reduced to 29 runs for 4 wickets, It all looked over as Pool collapsed to 65 runs for 9 wickets, but a 57 runs 10th wicket stand between Rupert Wyard (70*) and 14 year old girl Holly Richardson (5), brought some semblance of respectability to the score as Pool were finally dismissed for 122 all out in 36 overs. Chief destroyer for Steeton was new-father David Atkinson, who celebrated the birth of his first child Martha on Friday, with 6 wickets for 40 runs, and twice he was "on a hat-trick". The other bowlers to take wickets were Dave Cook (2-23) & David Wynn (1-26). The bowlers were well backed up by the fielders, with a slip-catch & run out by Phil Barrett earning him a league fielding point. A catch by Mark Chapman earned him a league fielding point, and there were further catches for keeper Julian Higginson, Matthew Thomas & David Robinson. Faced with a small total Steeton got off to a great start with a 101 run opening partnership between Dave Cook (55) & Mark Chapman (34*). Dave Cook's 55 runs were scored from 68 deliveries, including 1 six & 7 fours, before he was dismissed by a 14 year old girl. Julian Higginson scored 14* runs as the Steeton juggernaut passed the Pool total with 8 wickets and 38 overs to spare. Steeton scored 125 runs for 2 wickets in 25.5 overs, to collect another 6 points, which keeps then 17 points ahead of Bilton, with now just 3 matches to play.
Steeton 92 a/o in 31 overs
Green Lane 70 a/o in 31.4 overs
The Steeton 2nd XI juggernaut are division A champions, following a quite improbable victory on a "sticky-dog" at Green Lane. With 20 wickets falling and just 162 runs scored in 63 overs, I can let you make your own mind up about the state of this wicket. Steeton lost the toss and were asked to bat first on the 'difficult' wicket, and could only manage 92 all out in 31 overs. Opener Ajmal Patankar top-scored with just 18 runs, and the only other players to reach double figures were David Atkinson (17), David Robinson (12) & Matthew Thomas (10). Green Lane thought they had the game won, and certainly the heavy-roller on the track for 15 minutes during the lunch break helped to tame it slightly. Green Lane got off to a bad start and had lost their first 2 wickets with just 6 runs on the board, and were soon reduced to 45 runs for 7 wickets. With their last man being run out by Steve Roberts, Green Lane were eventually all out for 70 runs in 31.4 overs, to give Steeton their first ever 2nd XI championship. The team performed as a great 'unit' in the field with the bowlers being well supported by excellent fielding. Mark Chapman was out-standing in the gully taking 1 sharp catch, and keeper Julian Higginson added a further 3 victims to his season's tally. There were 3 wickets each for David Wynn (3-16) and David Atkinson (3-22), and they were well supported by Steve Roberts (2-24) & Phil Akrigg (1-4). In this remarkable match Steeton had managed to win by a margin of 22 runs, and with their closest rivals Bilton losing, they are runaway winners of the A division championship with 2 games still to play.
Steeton 80 a/o in 34.4 overs
Kirkstall Educational 81-2 in 16.4 overs
With the 2nd XI championship already won Steeton 2nd batted without much conviction and were all out for just 80 runs in 34.4 overs. Only 3 batsmen reached double figures: Mark Chapman (14), Alex Gledhill (13) & Julian Higginson (11). In reply Steeton managed to take 2 wickets before Kirkstall cruised past the target in just 16.4 overs. Alex Gledhill was the only bowler to take any wickets with 2 wickets for 9 runs from 2 overs - both wickets were caught, one each by keeper Julian Higginson & slip Phil Barrett. Ajmal Patankar was awarded the fielding point. This was a lacklustre performance and was not representative of how Steeton have played this season.
Steeton - 1 pt
Otley - 1 pt
Steeton 2nd XI's glorious season ended as a damp squib, with a rain soaked pitch at Otley meaning no play was possible.
Third XI 2005
Steeton 110 a/o in 39.4 overs
Thackley 112-3 in 24.5 overs
Steeton lost the toss and were asked to bat on a "sticky dog" of a wicket. All the batter struggled with the possible exception of skipper Mark Hedges, who top-scored with 33 runs, including 5 boundaries, before being run out. Opener Mick Wilson added a fine 24, and in the middle-order vice-captain Nick Brown scored a battling 17 and Matthew Thomas looked comfortable before going for 14. Steeton finished on 110 all out in 39.5 overs, which may have been a fighting score had the weather not intervened. Persistent drizzle that started during the lunch break changed the character of the wicket from "sticky dog" to a skidding/greasy surface, which was much easier for Thackley to bat on, and the wet ball made bowling more difficult. Steeton were unable to contain the Thackley batters, who knocked-off the runs in 24.5 over with 7 wickets to spare. Three Steeton bowlers took a wicket apiece: Matthew Thomas had the best figures, finishing with 1 wicket for 17 runs, but Steve Roberts was probably the pick of the bowlers with 6.5 overs 2 maidens 18 runs for 1 wicket and Phil Barrett took the other wicket at a cost of 21 runs from his 6 overs. Adam Hardwick & David Hedges were awarded the fielding points, and special mention goes to keeper Nick (Troggie) Brown, who did not concede any byes despite the difficult fielding conditions.
Steeton - 1 pt
Calverley - 1 pt
The fixture at Calverley was cancelled due to bad weather & an unfit pitch. Both sides get 1 point each.
Ilkley 62 a/o in 34.2 overs
Steeton 66-0 in 23.2 overs
Steeton 3rd XI were emphatic in their victory at home against Ilkley. Steeton won the toss an asked Ilkley to bat first on a damp track. Ilkley were in trouble straight away; losing their first wicket from the second ball of the innings. Fine bowling from all the Steeton bowlers restricted Ilkley to just 62 runs all out in 34.2 overs. The pick of the bowlers was Stephen Roberts who collected 3 wickets for just 9 runs from 8.2 overs. An aggressive 10 over spell from Matthew Thomas earned him 3 wickets for 22 runs. Phil Barrett collected 2 wickets for just 4 runs & Matthew Hagyard also collected 2 wickets for 12 runs. The fielding was of the highest order with skipper Mark Hedges taking 2 outfield catches, which earned him a fielding point. There were also catches for Mark Pennington, Matthew Hagyard & Adam Hardwick, and a fine fielding display by Paul Hardwick earned himself another fielding point. The rain came & tried to spoil the party, but when it cleared-up again Steeton set about the Ilkley bowlers with relish. The classy Mick Wilson scored a majestic 42* not out, including 7 boundaries; and his opening partner Mark Pennington was also not out, scoring 16*, including 2 boundaries. Steeton passed the Ilkley total without losing any wickets, in just 23.2 overs, to collected all 6 points from this 1-sided encounter.
Burley-in-Wharfedale 136-9 in 40 overs
Steeton 137-5 in 32.2 overs
Steeton 3rd XI proved too strong for Burley at Hodson Park, with the cricketing maxim "catches win matches" proving true. Batting first two of Burley's top batters were out to excellent one-handed catches by Steeton's Luke Pearson & Adam Hardwick. With a smart stumping by Nick Brown & a further comfortable catch by Mick Wilson, the bowling attack was well supported. The pick of the bowlers was Lee Spragg, who took 4 wickets at the cost of 35 runs from 10 overs. Stephen Roberts bowled 10 tight overs conceding just 10 runs and claiming 2 wickets; and the wily left-arm spin of Mick Wilson claimed a further 2 victims for 21 runs. Adam Hardwick (1-19) took the other wicket to fall, as Burley were reduced to 136 runs for 9 wickets from their 40 overs. Steeton's reply faltered early, losing their first 2 wickets for just 9 runs, before the innings was steadied with a third wicket stand of 53 between Lee Spragg (21) and David Greaves (36). Skipper Mark Hedges then top-scored with an unbeaten 44* from 35 deliveries, and including 9 fours. Adam Hardwick helped the cause with 11 runs, before the vice-captain Nick Brown (9*) joined his captain to hit the winning runs. Steeton passed the Burley total with 7 overs and 5 wickets to spare, finishing 137 runs for 5 wickets in 32.2 overs, to collect all 6 points from this encounter.
Beckwithshaw 176-7 in 40 overs
Steeton 177-3 in 40 overs
The experience of Steeton 3rd XI's batting line-up saw them through this difficult game. Beckwithshaw batted first on an excellent track and managed a formidable 176 runs for 7 wickets from their 40 overs. Mick Wilson's left arm spin earned him 2 wickets for 32 runs from his 10 overs, and Stephen Roberts' left arm medium pace earned him 2 wickets for 43 wickets from his 10 overs. The other wicket-takers were Charlotte Boulton (1-14), Zach Pearson (1-22) & Matthew Hagyard (1-42). In reply Steeton had lost 2 wicket for 35 runs, before 13-year-old Charlotte Boulton scored 13 runs. When she was out with the score on 55, Steeton's veteran skipper Mark Hedges came to the crease to join experienced opener Mick Wilson. What followed was a classic unbeaten stand of 122, which saw Steeton pass Beckwithshaw's total with 5 overs to spare. Mick Wilson top-scored with 74* not out from 77 deliveries, which included 1 six & 13 fours; Mark Hedges scored 70* not out from 68 deliveries, which included 1 six & 11 fours. Steeton scored 177 runs for 3 wickets from 34.2 overs, to collect all 6 points from this encounter.
Rawdon 198-8 in 40 overs
Steeton 202-5 in 34.2 overs
To complete a successful weekend Steeton 3rd XI won their match against Rawdon. Batting first Rawdon scored at a brisk tempo, and amassed a considerable total thanks largely to McCallum, who scored 61 for the visitors. Steeton's most successful bowler was Matthew Hagyard who took 5 wickets for 57 runs in 10 overs. The other bowlers to collect wickets were skipper Mark Hedges (1-6), Zach Pearson (1-21) and 10 tight overs by Phil Barrett saw him finish with 1-35. The bowlers were well supported by some good catches: Phil Barrett and David Greaves both took two well judged catches, and Stephen Roberts also caught one, which collected him a fielding point. Rawdon had scored at almost 5 runs per over and closed their innings at 198 runs for 8 wickets in 40 overs. Opener David Greaves got the Steeton innings off to a brisk start with 45 runs from 56 deliveries, including 8 boundaries. David shared a second wicket stand of 76 with Phil Barrett, who top-scored with 72 runs from 68 deliveries, and included 1 six & 10 fours. Phil also shared a fifth wicket stand of 82 with his skipper Mark Hedges, who remained unbeaten on 51* from 39 deliveries, and included 1 six & 7 fours. Mark is now averaging 198! Steeton's experienced batting had seen them through to a convincing win, having scored 202 runs for the loss of just 5 wickets from 34.2 overs. Six well earned points!
Rawdon 85-1 in 17 overs
Steeton
But for an administrative oversight Steeton 3rd XI should have progressed to the second round of the Chappell Cup following a thrilling bowl-out finish to this home fixture against Beckwithshaw. Beckwithshaw won the toss & decided to bat first, and had progressed to 85 runs for the loss of just 1 wicket from 17 overs when the rain started. The only wicket to fall was caught by Mark Chapman from the bowling of Matthew Hagyard (1-23). David Greaves collected a club fielding point. Rain hampered all attempts to get started again and so a bowl-out came into operation. Five bowlers bowled 2 deliveries each, but after the first phase the only bowler to hit the wicket for Steeton was Stephen Roberts - the score was Steeton 1 v Beckwithshaw 1. The sudden death came into operation with the same 5 bowlers bowling a single delivery each. Stephen Roberts was second up in the bowl-out and again he was on target, to give the final score Steeton (Stephen Roberts) 2 v Beckwithshaw 1. However this match result was overturned by the League, because Steeton had inadvertently played Mark Chapman, who had already played too many matches with Steeton 2nd XI.
Steeton 222-5 in 40 overs
Otley 185-8 in 40 overs
Steeton 3rd XI had a 4-2 winning draw away at Cross Green. Winning the toss & batting first on a hot sunny day, Steeton piled on the runs thanks to a majestic 90 runs from opener Mick Wilson. Mick's 90 runs came from 91 deliveries and included 2 sixes & 12 fours. Mick shared a 83 run fourth wicket partnership with youngster Scott Hanson, who scored 42 runs from 51 deliveries and included 5 boundaries. Scott then shared in a fifth wicket partnership of 51 with vice-captain Nick Brown, who smashed his way to an unbeaten 50* from just 37 deliveries, with 6 boundaries. David Greaves chipped in with 10 runs, and Steeton finished their 40 overs on a formidable 222 runs for 5 wickets. In reply Otley were going well, and had reached 73 runs in 15 overs before losing their first wicket. The introduction of David Greaves ripped the top out of the Otley batting order as he returned figures of 3 wickets for 29 runs from 7 overs. Steeton's field was of the highest quality, with 2 catches for Mick Wilson, and catches for Stephen Roberts & a fantastic diving catch in the covers by David Greaves. The accuracy of Adrian Emmott's fired return from the boundary led to a fine run out. Matthew Hagyard came back for a tight second spell and earned good figures of 2 wickets for 34 runs. The other bowlers to collect wickets were Adam Hardwick (1-12) and Stephen Roberts (1-49). Otley were contained to 185 runs for 8 wickets from their 40 overs, and Steeton collect 4 points from a winning draw.

Colton continued to lose wickets regularly and were soon 3 wickets down for 30 runs, and out of the run chase. From there they soon slumped to 44 runs for 7 wickets, and in 27.5 overs they were all out for 70 runs. Adam Hardwick took 3 wickets for just 5 runs in a 5 over spell. North Leeds 133 a/o in 35.4 overs

Every bowler used took at least 1 wicket, but the pick of the bowling was Matthew Hagyard, who collected 3 wickets for 26 runs from 6.4 overs. With the fall of the second wicket and the score on 44, Jonathan Smith came in and proceeded to hit sixes with ease. Jonathan hit 5 sixes and 2 fours as he scored 50* not out from only 50 deliveries. Steeton passed the North Leeds score with 15 overs and 8 wickets to spare, as they reached 136 runs for 2 wickets from 29 overs.
Bilton 136 a/o in 39.1 overs
Steeton 139-3 in 37.2 overs
To complete Steeton's winning weekend, Steeton 3rd XI beat Bilton by 7 wickets. Bilton batted first and scored 136 all out in 39.1 overs, a score which would have been embarrassing without 89 runs from Bilton's opener Ed Holmes. The damage was done by Steeton's 'Matthews' taking 3 wickets each: Matthew Thomas took 3 wickets for 27 runs from 9.1 overs and Matthew Hagyard took 3 wickets for 34 runs from 10 overs. The other wickets fell to Steeton's left-handers: Tom Stead took 2-23 and Stephen Roberts took 1-21. Steeton 243-5 in 40 overs

The other wickets to fall went to Zach Pearson (1-30), and coming out from behind the wickets, keeper Nick Brown caught & bowled Horsforth's top-scorer and finished with figures of 1-17, from 8 overs, including 5 maidens. Horsforth clung on to finish on 139 runs for 8 wickets in 40 overs, and so Steeton collected 5 valuable points from a winning draw.
