Steeton Cricket Club”s Under9 teams had a great start to the 2010 season by winning the Malsis Festival Cup on Sunday 27th June.
Whilst the majority of the population were awaiting in trepidation England’s World Cup game vs Germany, approximately 600 young cricketers, parents and supporters enjoyed a full day of cricket at Malsis School.
Glorious weather, great facilities and professional organisation resulted in an excellent day’s cricket. As always, the Under-9s section was keenly contested with teams submitted from Steeton, Skipton, Oakworth (2), Earby and Wharfedale cricket clubs. Each team played each other in a round-robin format with Steeton the clear victors with 5 straight wins. Each member of the team, comprising of Thomas Meakin, Waseem Qureshi, Adil Modak, Harris Rowlett, Anish Ghosh, Lucas Watt & Matthew Lister made individual contributions to what was ultimately a great team performance.
Many thanks to the team, their families and coaches for supporting this event.
Former Steeton player Harry Doane sadly passed away on 18th September 2010 peacefully at home. Harry was 75 years of age. A young Harry can be found on this old photograph of the official opening of the new pavilion at Summerhill Lane in 1951, which has been kindly sent to us by Kelvin Doane.
School Cricket Festival
Over 40 boys and girls from Silsden’s Hothfield Junior, Cowling Community Primary, Kildwick C.E. Primary and Lothersdale Community Primary schools enjoyed an afternoon of Kwik Cricket at Steeton Cricket Club.
The schools played each other in a ’round-robin’ competition, based on Gordon-Bowers rules and qualified coaches from Steeton CC were on hand to provide skills training. The games provided plenty of runs and all were keenly contested. However by virtue of winning all three of their games, Hothfield proved to be worthy winners with Lothersdale in runners-up position, 2 points behind. Despite Kildwick and Cowling putting together some good scores they couldn’t quite match the technique of the winners. Through a partnership arrangement with South Craven School, the school provided a great deal of support, and the umpiring and scoring was done by Junior Leaders. During the afternoon, players and spectators enjoyed refreshments and fruit provided by the club and although the weather was dull and blustery, the entertainment brightened up the day and the festival gave the youngsters a taste of junior cricket. A big thanks to all the schools for participating, to South Craven for their support and organisation, and to John Akrigg, Keith Meakin and Ron Clough for coaching on the day.
John Akrigg has now surpassed Bryan Tunney to become the highest run scorer in 1st XI cricket at Steeton with 8,250 runs & Gary Boulton has now hit a record 191 sixes in 1st XI cricket at Steeton eclipsing Andrew Smith”s previous record number of 190 sixes.
