Chairman’s Report 2014

Another enjoyable cricket season – all 3 senior teams competed well in their respective divisions.

No trophies unfortunately, but I feel it wasn’t for the lack of effort – the second XI came closest again finishing 2nd in the league.

Our first XI again maintained division one status – and early in the season were near the top of the table – but a lack of match winning performances and consistency meant we finished bottom half of the league – but we still managed to win 7 matches.

Our 3rd XI had a nucleus of young players and competed very well against much older and experienced opposition but were able to create one or two upsets which is encouraging.

Overall a well fought season with signs of promise for 2015.

2014 will be remembered I am sure for the retirement of two of our clubs most experienced players in Mick and Julian, but not before they won the League batting and wicket-keeping awards respectively. The Club is very proud of your achievements in the many years you have given to Steeton Cricket Club and we thank you both.

Our junior section is again growing stronger with league awards been achieved by individuals and representative honours in league sides – and I am looking forward to a successful 2015 season with more of our juniors being selected for senior cricket.

The Club members and committee have worked tirelessly again throughout the season to help run the club and I say it every year – we are the envy of most clubs and committees with our facilities and our persistence not to pay any player or official.

Looking forward the committee have listed projects which we hope to complete in 2015 to help improve our facilities further  – three of which are:

  • new toilets
  • a kitchen refurbishment
  • and bar improvements.

The Cricket Club is in very good order: both financially and in way of Club members – this was highlighted to me more with the recent bonfire – what a superb night and one of our biggest fund raisers – I would like to thank every member who helped make that night and the 2014 season a successful one – and it has been a pleasure been Chairman for 2014 and I am looking forward to a successful 2015 with hopefully a trophy or two.

Thank you

John P. Akrigg
